Istoria teoriei numerelor este o lucrare în trei volume a matematicianului american Leonard Dixon , care rezumă cercetările în teoria numerelor până în anii 1920. Stilul neobișnuit este că, practic, Dixon doar enumeră rezultatele obținute de diferiți cercetători, cu un minim de comentarii. Tema centrală a legii pătratice a reciprocității și generalizările ei este cu greu atinsă; se pare că această temă urma să facă obiectul celui de-al patrulea volum, care nu a fost scris niciodată [1] .
